Final Thoughts

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

To summarize my trip, I have to go back 6 years to when I was involved in a car accident that almost killed me.

The car accident was completely my fault, but I never knew that one mistake could lead to so much damage starting from outside in.

I was unable to look at my own face, and not to mention drive a car.

Living life from the other end of the spectrum, was hard to get used to.

When the insurance company sent me the check for my totaled car, I decided to purchased a motorcycle instead of a car.

I rode to conquer my demons.

And that was how it all began.

Ever since then, riding has always been a passion of mine.

It’s hard to describe the feeling that I get when I’m riding.

I would say it’s euphoria, adrenaline, and also fear.

But riding has been one of the few things that keeps me sane in this insane world.

When a blink of an eye is the difference between life or death, it puts everything else into perspective.

Your precise decision is what keeps you alive at that very moment.

Before leaving on this trip, I was working the graveyard shift as a manager at a restaurant in the city.

While working, I started to ponder, are we really just robots doing our part in sustaining our robotic lifestyle and existence?

Or aren’t we all supposed to try achieve something bigger than this?

Once I realized what role I played in the whole scheme of things, my job didn’t seem that important to me anymore.

I quit my job, and two days later I packed up my things, jumped on my bike and went west.

With no real plan of what, where or when, I began my journey into the unknown.

It’s been the best decision that I’ve made so far in my life.

Along my travels I have met many great people and made even greater friends.

I’ve seen places that one could only dream about seeing in one lifetime.

And I’ve felt things that I can’t even put into words.

I don’t know if I got all the answers I was looking for.

Actually, I don’t know if I have any answers at all.

Maybe that wasn’t the purpose of this trip.

All I know is that I had stopped searching when I started to look for answers.

This trip has made me a stronger person and has given me the ability to be versatile.

Now, I can truly say that I have conquered my fears.

Silver Spring MD - Tenafly NJ

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Oct.24-25, Tue-Wed

Knoxville TN - Silver Spring MD = 500miles - 8hrs

The colder weather was hard to get used to while riding.  So I decided to end my trip.

Before reaching home, I stopped by Silver Spring MD to visit my grandfather.

The ride out to MD, was the coldest riding I’ve ever done.  The temperature was in the low 40’s and with the wind chill factor, it must have felt like in the 20’s.

It go so bad at one point that I had to stop every 60 miles to wash my hands down with warm water to unfreeze them.

I don’t know how I made out to MD, but I got here in one frozen piece.

Silver Spring MD - Tenafly NJ = 240miles - 4.5hrs

If the weather was still bearable, I think I would have kept on going on this journey.

But with the weather getting colder by the day, I had to get home as soon as I could.

The way from MD to NJ wasn’t so bad.  It was just a straight ride home.

I got back to NJ without any problems.  And now, I’m finally home.

Knoxville TN - Deals Gap

Thursday, October 26th, 2006
Oct.20-23, Fri-Mon
St. Augustine FL - Knoxville TN = 600miles - 10.5hrs
Finally some Good news guys…
So I got a call from the dealer (US1 Powersports) and was told that the problem came from the Alarm system.
They told me that Yamaha Technical Support would cover 2hrs of labor, and US1 Powersports were covering for another 2hrs, but I was liable for the remaining 2 hrs at $85/hr.
I was pleased to have a 4hr discount, but not satisfied.
So I called Yamaha Corp. North Amrica and spoke to customer relations.
I explained to them how I had been on the road for a month and a half and how I’ve been blogging, using motorcycle forums to let others know about my journey.
And how it would be in their best interest to try to help me out and have a positive light in this whole negative incident.
Unfortunately, by the time I got to the dealership to pick up my bike on Friday, customer relations had not called me back.
So I went ahead and paid them for only 2hrs of labor, coming to a total of $170.32.
I gotta admit, US1 Powersports in St. Augustine worked their asses of to get my bike back up running when they were so busy with other bikes due to Biketoberfest.
When I got back to the hostel, I received a call from Yamaha Corp., they asked me if I had paid for the service, and I told them that I paid for 2 out of 6 hrs.
They told me that I shouldn’t have paid for anything at all and that Yamaha Corp. was taking care of the bill.
Yamaha Rocks!!!
They sent out a fax right away to the dealer for my refund.
I’m impressed at the power of the Internet.
After getting my money back, I shot straight up to Knoxville TN.
When I left home, it was still summer, and being in Florida for so long I had forgotten that the season had changed.
Dscn0758 It was a weird feeling riding back up north with the weather getting colder and the leaves changing color.  It all happened so fast.
One of the reasons why I went to Knoxville, was because there’s a hostel that’s only 1hr away from the Deals Gap.
The Deals Gap or the Dragon’s Tail, is one of the best, if not the best, motorcycling road in the country.
Any a true rider must make a pilgrimage to the Dragon.
Dscn0777 The Dragon is infamous for taking lives or anything near it.
Dscn0772Anyone who’s not able to tame the Dragon, and lets the Dragon have the best of them, has to post pictures up or even motorcycle parts on the Tree of Shame.
Dscn0799I spent 2 days taming the Dragon without incident, and I must admit, it was the best riding I have done so far in my trip or in my life.
I was able to mount my digital camera to my GPS stem mount and take a vid of the twisties.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc-QfrlIBvg
It’s a bit shaky, but that’s the best that I was able to do.
Also, while I was warming my tires, weaving back and forth, I almost lost control of the bike for a sec. Caught this on vid too.

Daytona Beach - St. Augustine

Thursday, October 19th, 2006
Oct.17-19, Tue-Thur
Miami FL - Daytona Beach FL = 270miles - 4.5hrs
Dscn0732 Since it’s Biketorberfest in Daytona, that’s where I went after Miami.
On the way there, I got a screw in my tire.
Dscn0718Dscn0723 I was able to find it before it deflated the tire.
And fixed it without any problems.
When I got to Daytona, I decided to ride around on the beach.
Dscn0725 Pay $5 admission  for the whole day, but ended up only riding up the 6 mile stretch of beach.
Dscn0731 While leaving the beach, I made a right turn a little too fast and dumped the bike on the sand.
Nothing happened cause the sand was soft.
But there was sand all over the bike.
Dscn0735 So I decided to wash it down at the nearest car wash.
After washing it, I tried to started it, but it wouldn’t start.
Dscn0738 Eventually I drained my battery and had to charge it back up with a borrowed portable charger.
Dscn0737 I checked all the fuses and dried the fuse box.
Checked all the connection and dried them up.
But still the bike didn’t start.
After around 3 hours, the bike started back up, but with some serious bogging.
After idling it at 6k rpm for about 10 min.
The idle came back to normal.
Daytona Beach FL - St. Augustine FL = 60miles - 1.5hrs
Dscn0747 I was able to ride it to St. Augustine without any problems.
But today, when I tried to start it back up, it wouldn’t start again…
So I decided to do some trouble shooting myself.
But when I went out to start working on it, it started to pour really hard.
So I said to myself F-it. I had enough of it.
Dscn0753 I called a tow truck and had it towed to the nearest yam dealership which was 4miles away.
I paid $90 to get it there, and once I got it there, the mechanics could not find the source of the problem.
I spent the whole day there, and I got a ride back to the hostel.
Hopefully by tomorrow they should have it fixed or else I’m just stuck here again….
God, or whoever is up there, Please have some mercy on my soul!!
There’s only so much that a human being can take!

Crooked Miami Beach Cops

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006
Oct.13-16, Fri - Mon.
Miami FL
So on Thurs. I went back to the Police station to get my stuff back, only to find out that they had given me the wrong schedule to meet my arresting officer’s supervisors.
They told me to come back on Fri. which I did.
When I got there, Sgt. Maxwell and Sgt. LaMaccio were there waiting for me.
They told me to come inside the conference room where we could talk privately.
Once in there, Sgt. Maxwell told me that he had some good news and bad news.
So I asked for the bad news first.
He told me that the arresting officer did not have my property and that he had returned it to me. Which was a complete lie.
Then Sgt. Maxwell said that the good news was that he had made me a copy of my old Florida driver’s lisence which had been expired.
I said "Excuse me?, What am I supposed to do with a copy of an expired Florida drivers license?"
Sgt. Maxwell said "You could take it to the DMV and get a temp NJ lisence"
I said "Huh?!? I don’t get it… so your telling me that you don’t have my stuff and that I’m supposed leave here with just that?"
He said "Yes."
So I asked to file a complaint.
When I did, Sgt. Maxwell told me that there were two options that I had.
First, the one that he clearly stressed that he did not want to do, was to file a formal complaint via Internal Affairs, and have a investigation done on the arresting officer.
Second, was to file a informal complaint is which would stay on the officer’s record in case he might want a promotion or etc.
Of course I asked for the formal complaint via the Internal Affairs.
When did so, Maxwell got up abruptly and said "No! I’m not doing that!"
I was like "Excuse me? I have the right to do so, since I feel that something wrong has been done to me. And not to account for what that officer has put me through the past few days"
Then he said "I don’t care, there’s no way I’m filing that formal complaint"
So I said "Fine then, so file the informal complaint"
Then he said "It’s too late for that now, you lost your chance. Why don’t you just take it like a man and leave while you still can!"
I couldn’t believe my freaking ears when he said that to me.
I got so fucking angry, but I knew that there was nothing that I could do but to leave before he put a phony wrap charge on me.
During the whole time, the Sgt. LaMaccio didn’t even say a word.
I was truly able to experience first hand on how corrupt the Miami Beach Police are. Starting from the bottom up.
I’m planning to write to the Miami Herald.  And go directly to the Internal Affairs and the FBI to file a complaint on both officers.
But right now I just wanna get hell outta FL.
This whole ordeal has taken a lot out of me.
I asked my sister to send me my passport overnight so that I have some type of legitament identification.
Since I asked her on Sat., I had to wait until Mond. afternoon to get it.
Without it, I can’t even rent a room for a night in any hotel or hostels.
It has been a midblowing experience thus far.
Who would have thought that I would be living inside a movie script.
Oh well I guess that’s life. Or at least that’s my life.

Everything is all good!

Oct.11-12, Wed - Thur

Miami FL

It’s been a insane past few days for me.

But I’ve managed to stay sane throughout this whole ordeal.

Yesterday, I went to court and saw the judge.

I explained what had happened and that I was on a cross country trip.

The judge in return, gave me a court fine of $314 and a cloud on my record.

This means that, this incident will never appear in my record unless I get arrested again for a criminal charge in Florida.

Later that day I had to go back to the same building were the courthouse was at, and have the bond reassigned to me.

Since Rob paid for the bond, it was supposed to go to his home address in Canada.

But since he’s staying in Miami, he wanted me to pay him back, so that I would receive the bond instead of him.

Overall yesterday was a good day.  I have taken care of everything and I’m ready to leave.

I still need my credit cards and drivers license.  Tonight, I’m going to pay my arresting officer a visit.

Hopefully he won’t play any games, and he’ll give me back my shit.

If he doesn’t, I’m planning to file a complaint with the police department and maybe write a letter to the Miami Herald newspaper calling him out.

I’ve learned a lot throughout this whole experience.

And have no regrets in coming to Miami or having this happen to me.

It has definitely made me a stronger person.

Knowing that I’ve been through just about everything, I feel that now, I can deal and overcome just about anything.

I’m Almost there!

Oct.10 Tue.

Miami FL

Dscn0699 Today I woke up early and went to the courthouse downtown to schedule a walk-in appearance in front of a judge.

Since the cop took my only piece of identification, it was hard to convince the court clerk to schedule me in.

But after a quick and descriptive explanation on how everything came about, she definitely felt my pain.

She went out of her way to help me out, and scheduled me for tomorrow morning at 8:30 to see the judge.

Once I see him, I won’t have to come back to this God forsaken place.

After the courthouse, I went to a Washington Mutual Branch office.

Again, I had to prove who I was and how everything had happened.

Since I wanted to pull out an extensive amount of money, they felt a little suspicious.  So I was only able to pull out $200.

The manager at Washington Mutual told me that this would be the only time that I could make a withdrawal without a piece of identification, and that if I tried it at another branch, it would be flagged in their computer system.

I got worried cause $200 wasn’t enough for myself or to pay Rob back for bailing me out, and lending me  the money for the room and food.

When I got to the hostel, I started to dig through my stuff and I found some checks that I had stashed away with a credit card that I haven’t used in a while.

With these two items, I can survive for a while.

It was the biggest relief out of my chest throughout this whole ordeal.

Now the only thing that I need to do is get my stuff back from that racist cop.

Things are finally working itself out.

Locked up in Miami Dade County Jail

Monday, October 9th, 2006
Oct.7 - Oct.8, Sat - Sun

Miami FL
= 0miles - 20hrs.
After 2 nights in Key West, I went back to Miami for a night, before heading back up north.

Pa070622 When I got to Miami, me and a few people from the hostel decided to go have a drink and walk around South Beach.

Everything was going well until one of the guys that we were with, decided to climb up the Versace House gate to show off. Fucking idiot!

It turned out that the cops were right behind the gate.

So I started to walk away, so that I wouldn’t get into trouble.

While we were leaving the scene, someone in the crowd started yelling some remarks like "pigs, toy cops, etc…"

The cops automatically assumed it was me.

And they walked up behind me and said "where the fuck you thinking you’re going CHINO?"

That shit pissed me off, so I turned around and said "What the fuck you did you say?"

Right when the word "What" came out of my mouth, 2 of them jumped on top of me and cuffed me up.

Dscn0696 I got locked up for disorderly conduct.

At first I thought that I would be out in no time, but it turns out that in Miami, they’ll treat you the same no matter what the charge might be.  Jaywalking, littering, loitering, robbery, larceny, rape, assault, and disorderly conduct.

I got booked and sent to Miami Dade County Jail.

Pa080623 Spent a 2 nights in population and got bailed out.

When I got arrested the arresting officer kept my money clip which had my license, credit card, debit card, and etc.. He conveniently forgot to process my property and kept it with him.

He also told the people that I was with, that I would be out in a few hours and that it wouldn’t be necessary to bail me out. What a fucking lie.

Luckily, Rob, the dude from Canada that’s doing the same thing as me, bailed me out, took care of my bike, my stuff in the room, and lent me money.

This whole shit has been fucked up.

I just wanna get the hell outta Miami.

But now I’m stuck here for at least a week or how ever long it takes for me to take care of everything.

Since the arresting officer works only on weekend nights, he’s off Mond-Wed.

So I have to wait until Thur. 11pm when his shift starts, to go talk to him and get my stuff back.

Plus, to make matters worse, I have to figure out a way to go to court while I’m still here, so that I don’t have to come back in a month.

I thought I had been through it all in this trip, but this is definitely is the worse experience so far.

I’m glad that my parents have given me great genes to be 6′3" and 200lbs.
This definitely helped out in jail, cause I was wearing brand new Nike Dunks, and all the thugs were coming up to me and asking what size shoes I wore, but they didn’t do anything.
To put it into perspective, Miami Dade County Jail, is one of the worst prisons in the US.
Anyways, I’m so pissed off right now, that this happened.

I don’t think I’ll ever come back to Miami.

Oh yeah, this post doesn’t contain any pics for obvious reasons.
But if it did, it would be the one of me in a dark grey Dade County Jail Inmate prison jumpsuit.

Key West

Monday, October 9th, 2006

Oct.5 - Oct.6, Thur-Fri

Miami FL - Key West FL = 160 miles - 4.5 hrs

Dscn0664 Since I had already made it down to the southern most point in the West Coast, I had to do the same on the East.

Key West was only about 160 miles from Miami.

Dscn0692 But the ride there felt a lot longer than that.  It had something to do with the fact that there’s only one lane on either side of traffic, and the further you go down, there were more elderly drivers.

Dscn0660 Everything in Key West was a lot more expensive than anywhere else.  Including the hostel which usually costs no more than $20, it was around $36 for a night.

Dscn0675 And the town had a weird vibe to it.  It’s hard to describe.  Well, everything there seemed a bit odd to me.  Wallgreens inside a theater, 7 eleven inside a house, drag-queens popping out of  Denny’s, eating lunch while surrounded by roosters crowing, bums Dscn0667walking around with shit stains on their pants, and just about anything that you can think of to be out of the ordinary in a perfect world, was just normal there.

If I was tripping or on something, it would have definitely bugged me out.

Dscn0671 I spent most of my time in Key West doing my laundry, going to the beach, and sight seeing a bit.

New Orleans - Pensacola - Gainesville - Miami

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Sept.29 - Oct.4, Fri - Wed

Sept.29 Fri.

Galveston TX - New Orleans LA = 370 miles - 6 hrs.

It’s been hard to keep my blog updated, but I’ve been doing my best.  With that said, after Galveston, I went to New Orleans.

So many people along the way told me to avoid New Orleans due to it’s high rate of crime.  But like anything else, I didn’t listen.  And I’m glad I didn’t.

Dscn0638 On the way to the hostel in New Orleans, it was evident that Katrina had definitely done major damage to the town.  Many areas were deserted, and some pockets in the city were still trying to rebuild.

Dscn0628At the Hostel, I met my roommates Evo, David, and a girl who was working at the hostel.

That night we went to Bourbon St. and got wrecked.

Dscn0629 It was crazy fun, but for some reason, I was thinking that it would have been way cheaper. The prices were similar to what we pay in the city.

Dscn0633 Since it was my first time there, I have no idea on how New Orleans used be like Pre-Katrina.  But I can just imagine how crazy it must have been.

New Orleans was one of the most unique cities that I’ve been to so far.

Sept.30 Sat. It was sad to see how much Katrina had destroyed this town.

Dscn0647 Block and blocks with of pure destruction with no end in sight.

Dscn0640 For some reason, a huge part of the French Quarter was spared including Bourbon St.

Oct.1 Sun.

New Orleans LA - Pensacola FL = 200 miles - 3 hrs.

After New Orleans, I left for Pensacola.

Dscn0655 Pensacola has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, and the softest sand.

At night, the moon just lights up everything around on the beach.

Oct.2 Mon.

Pensacola FL - Gainesville FL = 450 miles - 5.15 hrs.

After Pensacola, I went to Gainesville FL.

Dscn0658Spent one night at the hostel there.

I could barely sleep that night due to the mosquitos in the room.

I couldn’t understand how other people were sleeping while getting bit by mosquitos.

I think I lost a pint of blood that night.

Oct.3 - 4 Tues-Wed.

Gainesville FL - Miami FL = 430 miles - 5 hrs.

I was glad to leave Gainesville and go to Miami.

Miami4 When I got to the hostel, I met my roommate Rob, who just out of coincidence was doing the same thing as I was doing on a motorcycle.  But he started from Canada.

While eating dinner at the hostel’s chilling area, we met Itka and Andrea from Slovakia.

We decided to ask them if they wanted to go riding around town on the back of our bikes.  And without any hesitation, they agreed.

Miami1 We went to Coconut Grove and had some beers at hooters.

On the way back it started to pour on us.

Miami2 At first, I got little pissed off that the weather had turned on us, but after a while, I realized that there was no need to be angry and that I should just enjoy the moment.

When we got back to South Beach, we decided to go to a bar around the corner from the hostel, got hammered, and went back to the hostel…
